Recent
terrorist attacks in our country have reduced us (Nigerians) to a thing of
ridicule and pity in the eyes of many. Daily, the international media carries
one form of interview or news about our seemingly glaring weaknesses, corrupt
practices, dearth of good leadership and insecurity amongst others.
Today,
our country is at the fore of terrorist attack and we now experience those
cruel and brutal killings we often hear of and condemn in some Asian and
Middle-East countries. The on-going #BringBackOurGirls and #RealMenDontBuyGirls
campaign rocking the internet has drawn a lot of attention and support from the
foreign fronts with the likes of Michelle Obama, David Cameron, Christiane
Amanpour, Justin Timberlake, Forest Whitaker, Usher Raymond, Piers Morgan, P.
Diddy, Angelina Jolie, Drake, The Rock, The Kardashian sisters, Russell
Simmons, Anthony Hamilton, Wendy Williams, Malala Yousafzai and Naomi Campbell
all lending their voice; similarly, protests has been staged in Lagos,
Abeokuta, Ibadan, Osun, Calabar, Yola, Abuja, South Africa, England, Germany,
France and US on the same issue.
Unfortunately,
the FG it appears is not approaching the missing Chibok girls matter with utter
determination and commitment to unravel the mystery behind the over 200 missing
young girls in Chibok, because they are currently stretching themselves too
thin with various engagements like the on-going National Conference and the just
concluded World Economic Forum (WEF) in Abuja. Acknowledging our inadequacies,
the US, UK, France and China have all volunteered to assist us in resolving our
security challenges by providing intelligence and other resources. For this act
of kindness, we (Nigerians) are grateful to these countries and hope their kind
gesture wouldn't require us to be at their mercy in any way afterwards; just
saying.
Surprisingly,
rather than be embarrassed by our inability to handle our challenges as a
country, instead, Nigerians have taken to catching fun with the whole incident.
Several "Bring back our girls; take our runs girls" Display Picture's
(DP's) are making the rounds while different songs and videos of the First
Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan's "Gbagaunful" meeting with women
leaders is gaining mind-blowing views and downloads online daily.
The
truth is if we must grow as a nation then we must stop tackling people and
start addressing issues. So far, amongst the battalions abusing the President,
I haven't read of anyone who has provided realistic bullet point suggestions to
him as to how this security palaver can be tamed since he himself seems to be
eluded by the whole situation rather, people are expecting him to pull-off
certain stunts from his already strained mind.
Now
the girls are believed to be missing, everyone is showing concern; nice. I hope
all these people (especially the Nigerians who are faking concern so as to make
the news) will go ahead and take responsibility for their psychological
restoration, development and utter well-being afterwards because therein lies
the actual proof of their concern.
Whichever
way, whatever we decide to do, let's always have it at the back of our mind
that making Nigeria great is our collective responsibility and above all, when
we decide to take to callous criticisms of our leaders, we should always
remember that "Chai, DiarIsGod o".
